Levels of Phonological Awareness

1. Rhyme recognition: 3-4 years

Children at this age can recognize rhyming words and enjoy rhyme and alliteration.

Children may be struggling if they cannot complete the rhyme












2. Awareness of syllables: 4-5years

Children at this age can split words into parts

Clap the syllables for cupcake

Children may be struggling if they cannot identify the number of syllables











3. Sound isolation and blending: 5-6years

Kids can identify the beginning, middle, and end sound of a word

They can split a word into phonemes and blend the phonemes into a word

What is the beginning sound in “hot?”

What does “/r/ /e/ /d/” say?

Children may be struggling if they cannot identify the phonemes or blend them together


4. Phoneme substitution and deletion: 7+ years

Kids can delete or substitute an initial, medial, or end sound to create a new word

Change the /r/ in rake to /f/

Say flock without the /f/

Children may be struggling if they cannot say the word correctly after changing or deleting a phoneme
