• Kids can identify the beginning, middle, and end sound of a word
• They can split a word into phonemes and blend the phonemes into a word
• What is the beginning sound in “hot?”
• What does “/r/ /e/ /d/” say?
• Children may be struggling if they cannot identify the phonemes or blend them together
4. Phoneme substitution and deletion: 7+ years
• Kids can delete or substitute an initial, medial, or end sound to create a new word
• Change the /r/ in rake to /f/
• Say flock without the /f/
• Children may be struggling if they cannot say the word correctly after changing or deleting a phoneme
